June 9 Svalbard - whaling day
JUNE 09 2025, MONDAY
Svalbard Northern Region
There are not many communities to visit in this part of the world, however we will be visiting some landing sites where there are historical remains of whaling and sealing communities in years gone by.
We started in a whaling station to see the history but let's face it, it was cold so pics are from Bob and will come later. By cold I mean cold, my fingers were frozen. But it was surreal to stand in a place that was last inhabited in the 1600’s and think of what life would have been, yes they were killing whales but, they like us have no idea what effect what we do now will have in 400 years.
Then back on ship for a quick nap as you know I like a nap, this was a morning one but it was needed. lunch and then off again. Did I mention sticky toffee pudding.
Bob was kayaking so that is a whole story left to him but he had a great time.
I headed ashore. So skipped ahead every Canadian knows walk in the footsteps of the person in front of you when walking in deep snow. While on this walk someone, not me, did not listen and had to be rescued but 3 crew members, she was fine but was in the snow to waist deep. A lovely walk but she has a story to tell.
Then back on zodiac to see…. Wait for it …. About 30…… walruses. It was great. Sorry not a great pic but it was something to see. You could hear them bellow and move around, wonderful.
Then back on ship, run up to catch the end of trivia, but since so few on board they cancelled but I got 5 points for showing up.
Great dinner exchanging stories about our day. Chocolate Extravaganza tonight so heading up there soon.
Went up, danced to Footloose and came back to bed. Out and about at 8:20 tomorrow so off to bed.
